Many of our HHS departments are located inside the Lucy F. Covington Government Building at Colville Agency just south of Nespelem, WA on Hwy. 155, but some departments have their own facilities nearby or in other towns within the reservation including Inchelium, Keller and Omak.
A brief history of the 12 Tribes that comprise the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation can be seen here. Several cultural resources including Language, History and Archeology, and Community Centers can be found here. The Colville Indian Reservation covers 1.4 million acres of land in the southeastern part of Okanogan County, the largest county in Washington. In addition to a cultural richness that includes the Colville Tribal Museum in Coulee Dam and the legendary Omak Stampede and Suicide Race every August, the area offers fantastic access to lakes and trails for recreation plus an interesting geologic history. One such impressive geological feature is Dry Falls, a 3.5-mile-wide chasm of basalt, with a drop of 400 feet, that was left high and dry thousands of years ago as the last of several Ice Age floods swept through the Grand Coulee. The high desert is also home to a variety of wildlife including mule deer, bears, coyotes, bobcats and lynx, cougars, raptors like Osprey and eagles, and pygmy rabbits. The nearest town with "big box" stores is 36 miles from Nespelem in Omak (WalMart, North40, Big R, Grocery Outlet) where you can also visit the 12 Tribes Omak Casino Hotel. Spokane is just over two hours away including Spokane International Airport, served by eight airlines. Airway Heights, about 10 miles west of Spokane, has many stores and restaurants, Northern Quest Casino, Spokane Tribe Casino, and Spokane Speedway, an outdoor flat track for racing. |
