  • Substance use disorders used to be thought of as a social problem in which an individual lacked the necessary willpower to stop using a substance. Today, however, substance use disorders are considered a mental health problem and a chronic disease characterized by compulsive and impulsive behavior that leads to changes in brain function and chemistry.

Luckily, there are options available for people who are dealing with substance use disorders. These options include abstaining from use, harm reduction treatment, residential treatment, and medication assisted treatment.
